Dissertation Binding

Nowadays, dissertation binding is an obligatory requirement for dissertations. First of all, dissertation binding makes your work look nice; second, it protects your dissertation from damage.

All universities and colleges have their own requirements for dissertation binding, but the general rule that all institutions have is that you have to bind two copies of your dissertation. These copies will be placed in the archive of your university or college. If you want to keep the dissertation for yourself, you will
have to make one extra copy.

As it was mentioned above, the requirements for dissertation binding are different, but there are general rules that you have to follow in order to bind your dissertation. You should get ready for dissertation binding.

  • Follow all the technical guidelines, established by your department. This means that you should know the requirements for the format of your dissertation, paper weight, etc. If your dissertation format does not correspond to the requirements, you may have to pay extra.
  • If you have any pictures in your dissertation, mind that they should also correspond to special format requirements.
  • Pay attention to the paper you use. It should be acid free. Otherwise, the pages may impair or become yellow.

  • Do not forget about the margins. Usually, the margins should be set at 1 inch on all sides of the standard size paper – 8.5 x 11 inch.
  • Make sure your dissertation has all required parts and signs; otherwise, it might not be accepted.

Before dissertation binding, you should carefully check everything. Pay attention to the numbers of pages, you have to make sure that all pages go one after another and nothing is missing. If you do something wrong, you will have to bind your dissertation once more and this procedure is rather expensive. What is more, you will waste time. That is why you should take care about dissertation binding long before you have to submit your work.

Do not forget that it takes around 2-4 weeks to bind your dissertation. So, make sure you have enough time!
